Forensic Volcanoes

The forensic volcanoes will form the initial focus for STREVA. They have been selected on the basis of being currently or recently active, having substantial geophysical data streams and substantial proximal populations affected by recent eruptions. All our examples are andesitic arc volcanoes so there are some similarities, but also significant differences in social and political contexts, the styles and sequence of volcanic activity, the way that the scientific institutions and authorities have approached the emergencies and the manner in which the hazards and institutional responses affect the local population. There are tremendous opportunities for knowledge and experience sharing in applied aspects of volcanology, crisis management and decision-making.
